My Bloody Valentine - mbv

Apparently, My Bloody Valentine have released a new album. Yes, that's exactly what I just said. Their last one was 21 years ago. Also, it was a good one. Hell hath frozen over. You can buy it on their website but don't count on it because apparently it totally crashed due to millions of people clamoring for it.

I picked it up earlier in the week and must say I am underwhelmed. I read all of the glowing reviews and then I hear an album that doesn't seem to be all that interesting sonically, lyrically, or intrumentally. Maybe I am missing something? I have thought of MBV (the "band") and Neutral Milk Hotel in the same way for some years. Two groups that each put out one very good album. I just don't get the hype, respect, and mythology associated with Jeff M. and Kevin S.

Also, I can't get your blog to load past the Smiths post paragraph: "Here is an excerpt from Chapter 7 of my (still unfinished) rock'n'roll memoir. It's the one on the Smiths." or that individual post to load past that sentence. Other posts load fine (before and after) just not that one... Maybe this is on my end.

Hey Kickin' out the Jams! About the new MBV record--I actually liked it. But that might be colored by my expectation that nothing could live up to "Loveless" so any follow-up was bound to be terrible. And it's not terrible. I've played it a few times and it's definitely growing on me. I like the way the album is divided into triads, moving from pop to more experimental. That said, I may have drunk the kool aid on Kevin Shields in that I do like MBV (the band). Their EPs "Glider" and "You Made Me Realize" for example are amazing little music statements. I do concur with you on Neutral Milk Hotel. I tried liking "In the Aeroplane over the Sea." It's nice but I never get Jeff Magnum cult.

About the Smiths post: that's weird. I tried a bunch of different browsers and devices and it seems to load. I'll try my computer at work and see if it works and then repost, if needed.

The new MBV is growing on me a bit. I'll check out those EPs too.

I think it's fantastic! Really didn't expect it to be so good.
